What is the easiest way to get rid of old furniture in Kent?

If the furniture is in good condition, a charity collection or selling it online is the cheapest route. If it is worn, bulky or there is a lot of it, book your district council's bulky waste collection or a licensed clearance team who will lift it out of the property and take it the same day.

1. Donate to a charity

Many charities across Kent take furniture, and some collect it for free. Large charity furniture shops and local hospice shops are usually the first places to try. Ring or book online before you load anything up, because each shop has its own rules and collection days.

The key rule is the fire safety label. Upholstered furniture such as sofas, armchairs, headboards and cushions must carry its original fire label to be resold in the UK. If the label has been cut off, most charities will politely refuse it. Other common reasons for a no are stains, pet hair, broken frames and flat-pack furniture that has already been moved once.

  • Check the fire label is still attached before you call.
  • Take clear photos. Many charities ask for them before booking.
  • Expect to wait a week or more for a free collection slot.
  • Used mattresses are rarely accepted for hygiene reasons.

2. Sell or give it away online

Facebook Marketplace, local Facebook groups, Freecycle and Gumtree all work well in Kent towns, especially for solid wood, branded pieces and garden furniture. Pricing an item low, or listing it as free for collection, usually gets it gone within days.

The catch is time. You will need to answer messages, deal with no-shows and often help carry the item out. For one good piece that is fine. For a whole house it rarely is.

3. Council bulky waste collection

Every district and borough council in Kent, plus Medway Council, runs a paid bulky waste collection. You book online, pay a set fee for a number of items, and leave them outside on the agreed day. Prices, item limits and wait times differ between councils, so check your own council’s website.

It is a good choice for two or three items you can carry outside yourself. It is less useful if items are upstairs, if you have more than the item limit, or if you need everything gone on a set date.

4. Take it to the tip

Kent County Council runs 19 household waste recycling centres, and most household furniture can be dropped off free. You need to book a slot online before you go, and larger vehicles may need a vehicle voucher. Medway runs its own three sites for Medway residents. Our guide to Kent tips and recycling centres covers booking, charges and van rules.

The tip is cheap, but it means hiring or borrowing a van, getting help to lift, and possibly several trips.

5. Return it with a new purchase

If you are buying a new sofa, bed or mattress, ask the retailer if they take the old one away on delivery. Many do for a small fee. Book it at checkout, because adding it later is not always possible.

6. Upcycle or break it down

A tired chest of drawers can often be sanded and painted. Wooden furniture that is past saving can be dismantled so it fits in a car for the tip. Wear gloves, watch for nails and staples, and never burn painted or treated wood at home.

7. Use a licensed clearance team

When there is a lot of furniture, heavy items, stairs or a deadline, a clearance team is usually the quickest answer. We lift everything out, protect floors and walls on the way, and take it in one visit. Anything reusable is passed on or donated, the rest is recycled where possible, and you get waste paperwork for your records.

We clear single items through to whole properties across Kent, including Maidstone, Canterbury, Medway and Tunbridge Wells. See our house clearance service, or send photos for a quote.

What not to do

Never leave furniture on the pavement unless your council has booked a collection, and never hand it to someone who knocks on the door or answers a social media post without checking they are a registered waste carrier. If your furniture is found fly-tipped, you can be fined too. Our guide to fly-tipping in Kent explains how to check a waste carrier in two minutes.

How to Get Rid of Old Furniture in Kent: common questions

Can’t see your question? Add it to the quote form and we’ll answer by email.

Will charities in Kent collect a sofa for free?

Some will, as long as the sofa is in good condition and still has its original fire safety label. Contact the charity first and send photos, as each one has its own rules.

Can I take furniture to the tip in Kent?

Yes. Most household furniture is free at Kent County Council recycling centres, but you need to book a slot online first. Medway residents use the three Medway Council sites.

What is the cheapest way to get rid of a sofa?

Selling it, giving it away online or a free charity collection costs nothing. If the sofa has no fire label or is worn, the council bulky waste service or the tip are the next cheapest options.

Do you take old furniture as part of a clearance?

Yes. We remove furniture of all sizes, from a single wardrobe to a full house, and pass on items that can be reused.
