What happens to items after a house clearance?

A responsible clearance sorts items first: valuables are set aside, good furniture and household goods are reused or donated, metals and electricals are recycled, and only what cannot be reused is sent for legal disposal. Ask your company to explain its process and provide paperwork. See our house clearance service.

Step 1: sorting

Items are separated into valuables, reusable goods, recyclables and waste. Anything you asked us to keep is set aside before loading.

Step 2: reuse and donation

Furniture and household goods in good condition are reused or donated where possible. See donating furniture in Kent.

Step 3: recycling

Metal, electricals, wood and card are recycled through licensed facilities. See the Kent recycling centres guide for what goes where.

Step 4: disposal

Only items that cannot be reused or recycled go to landfill or energy recovery at licensed sites, with paperwork.

How to check

  • Ask what happens to the items.
  • Request waste transfer paperwork.
  • Be wary of firms that cannot explain their process. See choosing a clearance company.
